Old-Fashioned Cabbage Rolls
Ingredients
:
You'll need cabbage, ground beef, ground pork (optional), cooked rice, onion, egg, cheese.
Cabbage Prep
:
Boil a large pot of water, core and peel cabbage leaves, blanch them for 2 minutes until pliable, then drain.
Meat Filling
:
Mix ground beef, ground pork, cooked rice, chopped onion, egg, cheese, garlic, thyme, oregano.
Assembling
:
Place 2-3 tablespoons of the filling in each cabbage leaf, fold sides over, and roll tightly.
Sauce
:
Combine tomato sauce, beef broth, diced tomatoes, brown sugar, vinegar, paprika, salt, and pepper.
Layering
:
Spread a bit of sauce on the bottom of a baking dish or Dutch oven. Arrange cabbage rolls seam-side down.
Baking
:
Cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1.5 to 2 hours until the cabbage is tender and filling is cooked.
Freezing
:
Cabbage rolls freeze well. Cool completely, store in airtight containers, and freeze for up to 3 months.
